Charles watched as his meal ticket walked away from where he lay on the ground writhing in pain. He tried to get to his knees, but as he got one knee to the floor Sassy advanced on him again saying,

“Go ahead, mother fucker. Try me.”

Memphis leaned into Gus’s side and kissed his cheek.

“My hero!” she joked, “Thanks Sassy.”

“Hey, wait a minute!” Gus said smiling, “I thought I was your hero?”

“Oh, you are.” Memphis agreed, “But Sassy is bad ass.”

They all stood having a good laugh. Then it was business as usual. The bar filled up with patrons, Memphis took orders and delivered food and drinks. Gus stayed and sat at the bar throughout her shift, watching her with love shining from his golden flecked eyes. Memphis would always be the most important thing in his life. Forever.

“Dang it,” Memphis yelled, stepping on a Lego and doing the one-legged hop while trying to rub her injured foot. “

Gus walked into the house to see chaos reigned. The boys, who’d just turned two, were sitting watching their mom hop around like a crazy person while their nine-month-old daughter, Manda watched in interest from her swing as she gurgled her happiness.

“Well, what do we have here?” Gus asked as he closed the door.

“Your children have decided that today is the day to torture me,” Memphis explained on a tired sigh, “I’ve been trying to get this mess cleaned up for an hour. We have people coming over for a BBQ.”

“It will be fine,” Gus assured her, kissing her temple he gently pushed her towards the couch, “Come on boys, let’s help mommy and get this to a manageable pile.”

“K, daddy.” Andre answered from his spot on the floor.

“Yep, let’s do it.” Atticus Jr said, grinning.

Both boys picked up their toys, Manda giggled as she swayed back and forth in her swing. All was right in their small world. With an indulgent smile Memphis wondered how Gus would feel once she told him she was pregnant, again.
