Prohibited 2:Illicit Affairs(9)

“Good afternoon Junior.”

He ignored me and walked further into the kitchen. He started going through boxes of floor tile. I just shook my head. My bitch of an ex-wife has done everything she can to convince my son that I was a bad husband and father. Yes, I cheated on her and I was wrong but I wasn’t the only one.

Reality had proven I was never my wife’s type. The parts I wielded between my legs weren’t exactly what she wanted and there was nothing I could do to change that. Whether I cheated on her or not, she never wanted me.

Getting my eldest son to see my side was the toughest thing I’ve ever had to do. He had always been a Mama’s boy and even though he was 26 with a wife of his own, she still had a hold on him stronger than anything I’d ever seen.

I heaved a sigh.

I decided I wasn’t going to ignore him this time. I was going to talk to my son. I followed him over to the boxes of tile he was inspecting. I stood there staring at him until he couldn’t take it anymore. He couldn’t take my eyes burning holes through him. He turned and looked at me. What I saw in his eyes shook me to my core. I saw pure hate and I almost changed my mind.

No, I can’t change my mind. This was my son. I had made up with Maxine and hoped eventually I could make amends with him. My kids, no matter what the situation, were important to me.

“Can I help you with something?” He asked.

I looked over at Lorenzo. He was watching the entire scene.

“Junior, I think it’s time we talk.”

He sighed.

“No, I’m not really in the mood to have a conversation with you Michael.”

He was beginning to piss me off. It took everything I had to control my anger.

“I understand you are upset and what happened between me and your mother has not been a good thing. Our marriage just didn’t work. We are better people apart and hopefully we can find happiness without each other. But none of this has any affect on how much I care about you and your brother.”

He laughed.

I wasn’t expecting that.

“How long did it take you to practice that speech?” he asked still laughing.

I was trying not to give up. It was difficult. He sounded like Maria. He got that nasty attitude from his mother.

“Mikey, you are my son and I want us to get on the road to recovery in our relationship.”

He stood looking down at me. Being a couple of inches taller, he used that to intimidate me. He forgot one thing, however.

No one intimidates me.

We stood face to face. I could feel Lorenzo inching closer.

“There is no recovery with us. You cheated on my mother, made her gay and now you want to take her house and son away from her. You are a low life and the last thing I want to do is reconcile with you.”

I dropped my head for a second trying to breathe. He got me. I was livid and yes, I was taking the bait.

“You disrespectful little shit. I am still your father and I raised you to respect your parents. Your mother and I weren’t happy together period. And I’m not sure if you know how things work but you can’t turn someone gay. Your mother married me to conceal the fact that she was gay.”

Lorenzo took another step towards us. He could sense what was about to happen.

“Your mother’s filling your head with this garbage and I can understand why you are upset but…”

I took another step closer and this time we were face to face and chest to chest. Any space between us dissipated.

“You will respect me” I yelled.

His nostrils were flaring and his breathing was heavy. He wasn’t the only one. We were matched in our anger.

“Get out of my face!” He demanded.

I refused to back down.

“No.”

There was no room left between us and I made sure that he looked me in the eye. He took a step back and I assumed he was backing down until he swung, catching me off guard. His right fist made solid contact with the left side of my face. I stumbled back a little.

I couldn’t believe he hit me.

At that moment Lorenzo stepped in between us before I could retaliate. My face was throbbing and I was pissed. My breathing was heavy and I took several deep breaths in hopes I would calm down and not kill my son. .

Lorenzo pointed at Mikey.

“Get the fuck off the site!”

“Gladly,” he replied.

He stormed out slamming the door behind him when he left.

“Are you all right?” Lorenzo asked me.

I looked at him still holding my hand over my face and… I started to laugh. It was a deep rich belly laugh.

“That little motherfucker hit me.” I said still laughing.

Lorenzo looked at me like I was crazy at first. Then he burst into laughter leaning across the counter. We just couldn’t stop laughing. Rick our general contractor walked in, looked at both of us without saying a word, then he walked right back out the door.
