Grant smiled and rested his head on her shoulder.

“I’m going to miss the kids so much,” Kit sighed. “But I’m glad to have you to myself for a little bit.”

“They’ll join us after a few days,” he reminded her.

“I know, but I’m their mother. It’s hard not to be with them.”

“I feel the same.” He brushed the back of his fingers over her arm. “But I’m selfish sometimes still. I want you to myself.”

“That’s okay, too.”

Kit set her dinner down. The future sprawled before them, two partners in life, parenthood, and even business. As hard as things could be, it seemed to get easier between them. They had a rhythm, the two of them. When they’d first known one another, they had been out of sync, falling in love at different times, needing each other unequally. Now, they had both done their waiting, learned to hold each other instead of run. Their hearts beat as though one, and whatever came before them, they could weather.

Their lips met as energetically as though it were their first time. They had always been drawn to one another. Now they never had to be apart again.
